ST. LOUIS - 2020 will be the 40th year CASA has been in existence with 2019 being a record setting year of serving 1,000 children in the foster care system. This speaks to the need for this program and why even more volunteers and funding are needed.
Arica Laurel is a Case Advocacy Supervisor and has worked with foster kids for four years. She says "being able to be that extra person to push them towards reunification, adoption or guardianship is really inspiring.”
These foster children range in age from infant to 21 years old and come from all walks of life. Laurel adds many of them have “behavioral issues and emotional issues, no fault of their own. They’re coming in through situations where they’re being neglected or some parents have substance use."
CASA of St. Louis kicking off their holiday workshop this week with presents being donated from various companies around the St Louis area. CASA volunteers come in and pick out individualized holiday gifts for their children in foster care. “Some foster families don’t have the resources to provide all the presents for the kids they have in their care,” says Laurel. CASA of St. Louis helps to “provide those gifts and just a little bit of relief on the foster parents.”
