EAST ST. LOUIS, IL -Bullets flew early Saturday morning in East St. Louis after investigators say that people inside two vehicles were involved in a rolling gun battle. It went down about 6:30am on South Main, right off the interstate and not far from the East St. Louis Police Department.
A Nissan Rogue was riddled with bullet holes. Police tell us the driver, an adult woman, was shot three times, once in her hand and twice in her buttocks. She was taken to a hospital but her wounds are considered non-life threatening.
Investigators tell us the Rogue was one of the vehicles involved in the gun battle. Police say the other vehicle, possibly a red Ford Taurus, drove off. Investigators believe the gunfight erupted after something took place in another part of East St. Louis.“I think whatever incident happened happened in the city and this person was trying to get on the highway and might have been bumped off the highway; looked like the cars kind of hit each other, were bumped off the highway, back over to this area when the gun battle happened,” explained Sergeant Kendall Perry with the East St. Louis Police Department.
Investigators tell us there are at least eight bullet holes in the Nissan Rogue. At this point, police say it’s unclear how many total people may have been involved in the gun battle. The Rogue has Montana license plates. Police say it’s a rental car.
There was also a Dodge Avenger at the scene. Police suspect the one person in that car had some kind of role in the incident although not the actual shooting. That driver was taken into custody as a person of interest.
Illinois State Police were called in to help process the crime scene.
Investigators found a total of 22 shell casings from an AK-47 assault rifle and a 45 caliber handgun. Police want those involved in this case off the streets before any additional violence happens.
“Investigators will talk to the victim, see where this started, and then go from there,” said Sgt. Perry.
