On Friday, Jewell Q. Smith, 20, of Fairview Heights, IL, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter. Bond has been set at $100,000.

Cole Wierciszewski was shot February 12 just after 5:15 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of Paulette Drive, not far from the Skyview Drive-In. He was rushed to Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The Major Case Squad says seven people were in the home at the time of the incident, all of them friends. They say the shooting was unintentional.  Wierciszewski was shot in his room with a 20-gauge shotgun that he had recently purchased legally.

Wierciszewski was known as an ambitious student, graduating from Belleville-East High School last spring while already taking classes at Southwestern Illinois College through a special dual enrollment program.
