UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. – The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged a 17-year-old in connection with the shooting death of a fellow teenager in University City.

According to a spokesperson for the University City Police Department, the shooting occurred Saturday around 1:45 p.m. in the 6600 block  of Bartmer. A caller told police they saw a person lying on the ground and bleeding from the mouth. The victim, identified as 17-year-old Alvin Sanders, was rushed to Barnes Jewish Hospital where he later died.

Over the course of the investigation, police learned Sanders and a friend, Dashon Gavin, were playing with handguns at the victim’s home. The gun in Gavin’s hand went off and a round struck Sanders in the face. Sanders ran from the home and collapsed outside a neighbor’s residence.

Gavin was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter. He was jailed on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

Police have not said how the teenagers came to possess the firearms.
