ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - Police chase smash and grab thieves from St. Charles into St. Louis city early Friday morning. It all started when police caught the bad guys in the act. One suspect was caught inside the Rent-A-Center just off Regency Parkway and I-70, but others were able to get away.

Some St. Charles police are still on the scene after a crazy sequence of events. The suspects apparently threw something through a window here to get into the business.

This all started a little after 4am when a St. Charles Police Sergeant on patrol heard an alarm going off at the store. When he came to investigate he saw the suspects in the act of burglarizing the store. Authorities tell FOX 2 that the men jumped into a silver Pontiac Grand-Am and started driving toward the officer's cruiser. The car was not hit.

Three suspects took off with St. Charles Police chasing them. They drove on I-70, over the Blanchette Bridge, into St. Louis County. The Grand-Am got off on Jennings Station Road. The pursuit continued to Goodfellow and eventually wound up on St. Louis Avenue. That is where police lost the Grand-Am.The suspect's vehicle had a temporary Missouri tag.

The suspect arrested at the scene is in custody at the St. Charles Police department.
