ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Some of the coldest temperatures to hit St. Louis this season are here this weekend, helping people all across the Gateway City usher in the holidays.

At Union Station, the Salvation Army Festival of Lights featured the official tree lighting and fireworks show.  Inside, the ice skating rink is open and families can even enjoy a sledding down a makeshift slope.

“I’m with my two grandchildren and thought it would be a fun thing for them to do” said Tullia Hamilton.

“I really like the lights around here” said Logan Knapp.  “They’re dripping green and they change to yellow and everything” he said.

In addition to it looking like the holidays, the weather is helping it to feel like them too.

“It helps with the ambience.  It definitely brings the holiday feel to everything they have set up”.

“It’s nicer if you’re inside looking out at it I think” said Hamilton.

With the colder temperatures and changing season, the folks at Thies Farms are protecting their crops.

“There are a lot of things that are going to make it through, there are things we still have flowers that look like the middle of summer, we’re going to lose those tonight, but it’s time” said Dave Thies.

Thies says being so late in the year, the colder temperatures are well overdue.

“A few cold nights like this is actually very good. That’s what we need to gradually cool down before we really get cold and drop down to the teens” said Thies.

From the plants to the people, this weekend’s first widespread freeze is a reminder of the season on the way.

“It’s nice to have some cold weather” said Knapp.  “I’m just waiting for snow though” he said.
