MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – The Missouri State Auditor issued a scathing audit of Montgomery County, saying officials there misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Auditor Nicole Galloway says Montgomery County leadership used money that voters intended for fixing up the jail and instead used it for other expenses like copiers, televisions, and payroll. Galloway says the law requires the money to be used as voters intended.

Our 'You Paid For It' team caught up with Montgomery County officials, who said they needed the money to meet expenses. They said they intended to pay back the money they borrowed from the fund two years ago, but never paid it back.

The audit also accuses officials of charging too high a property tax rate and collecting more than $100,000 more than they should have

Officials told us that they just made a mistake.

Galloway gave Montgomery County a rating of ‘Poor’ and directed officials to pay residents that was illegally collected.
