Bevo Mill residents stunned by fatal shooting in home invasion

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Police say that the 73-year-old homeowner was in the garage when two men started to break in at around 4:15pm.

Investigators say the suspects were armed and wanted to steal the man's truck.

The homeowner was also armed and shot and killed the two trying to force their way into his garage.

The St. Louis Fire Police Department confirms that two black males were shot and killed.

Handguns were recovered from the scene. The identities of the suspects have not been released at this time.

Neighbors tell us the Bevo Mill Neighborhood is a close-knit community and are shaken by the fatal shooting in their neighborhood.

They also call the robbery victim a kind man who has lived in the neighborhood for a long time with his wife.  They say the 73- year-old man would work hours on his truck in his garage and  would help those in  need  in the community.

“He's been retired for 10 to 15 years and very active.  I will probably double-check our cameras in the back and make sure they are working,” said Ron Pratt

Residents say the elderly man had been the victim of robbery attempts in the past.

Police have not released the names of the of the two people the homeowner shot and killed, but  say the would be robbers were between the ages of 16 and 20.
