ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Distemper has killed 17 dogs at Stray Rescue’s animal shelter after a virus outbreak. The outbreak has caused the facility to close for the time being.

Most of the dogs affected were puppies.

Founder Randy Grim says about 24 dogs tested positive for the disease so far.

The shelter will not be accepting dogs for the next 30 days.

Grim said he believes the outbreak was caused by infected raccoons in the area.
