UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KPLR) – University City police had the intersection of Mendell and Canton taped off Wednesday night.

Water filled the streets and a strong natural gas smell was in the air.

Laclede Gas and Missouri American Water crews on the scene appeared to be working to shut off the water and gas.

Fox 2's Erika Tallan talked to neighbors in the area who said crews had been digging in that intersection for at least the last month replacing the sewer pipes.   Neighbors say a water main broke,  which caused water to gush everywhere, caused a portion of the roadway to collapse and toppled heavy machinery onto a gas line- rupturing that gas line.
