CLAYTON, MO (KPLR) – The St. Louis County Police Department is coming to grips with a sudden loss.

This week St. Louis County will prepare to lay to rest Officer Blake Snyder, who was killed in the line of duty.

Chief Jon Belmar sat down with Jasmine Huda to talk about how his department is coping.

Chief Belmar said this is every police chief’s fear, the loss of an officer.  He said when the news came that Officer Snyder didn’t make it was one cascading heart break after another.

Signs of mourning are all around the county police headquarters.  This is the first line of duty death Chief Jon Belmar has had to deal with on his watch and the first for the department in 16 years.

Officer Snyder was shot while responding to a disturbance call last Thursday in the Green Park neighborhood.

The news of his death hit him, his staff and Officer Snyder’s family hard.

We spoke with officer Snyder’s wife, Elizabeth last week and Chief Belmar told us he admires her for her strength to express her feelings and to talk about his service and sacrifice.
