ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)- The American Heart Association says kids between 2 and 18 should eat no more than 6 teaspoons or 25 grams of sugar per day. For some, cutting sugar could be a hard habit to break.
Dietitian Lori Jones joined us on FOX 2 News in the Morning with the new guidelines.
– The American Heart Association recommends children between the ages of 2-18 eat no more than six teaspoons or 25 grams of added sugars daily – which is equivalent to about 100 calories.
– Children and teens should limit their intake of sugar-sweetened drinks to no more than eight ounces weekly.
-Added sugars from sugary drinks account for about half of the calories from added sugars that children are currently consuming, and they are considered a contributor to the obesity epidemic.
– The recommendations advise that children under the age of 2 years should not consume foods or beverages with added sugars, including sugar-sweetened drinks.
