FREDERICKTOWN, MO (KPLR)- Fredericktown Police Sgt. Mike Sletten was appalled when he discovered a missing World War I plaque from Memorial Park. The plaque contained the names of 37 veterans killed while serving their country. Each one was from Madison County, Missouri.

Police Chief Eric Hovis said two suspects have been arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. Robert Halpin and Gregory Hanks deny stealing the plaque but admit selling it for scrap, according to police.

Sletten said he has military members in his family and is also a member of Historic Madison County. The group is part of a community effort to replace that plaque.

“It was a personal issue for me,” said Sletten. “We take a lot of pride in our community.”

Hovis said anyone wanting to help replace the old plaque can contact the police department at 573-783-7401.
