ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - A Jennings family is mourning the loss of a baby boy. The St. Louis City Circuit Attorney has charged the infant’s father with his murder.

Devontay Bell should have been celebrating his first birthday Tuesday.  Instead his mother and grandparents are preparing for his funeral.

The infant had been staying with his father, Deveontay Bell, age 22, in the 3700 block of Keokuk in South St. Louis.  Bell called for medical help Friday night saying the child was not breathing.

The probable cause statement says, “when paramedics arrived on the scene, the child was cold to the touch and remained unresponsive.”

The baby was pronounced dead at Cardinal Glennon Hospital.  Witnesses told police the father had been caring for the baby for at least 24 hours.

The father is now charged with second degree murder and child abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death.

According to a preliminary autopsy injuries included a severe laceration to the baby’s liver and damage to other organs. The medical examiner told police the findings are “consistent with being struck in the abdomen.”
