ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged a 43-year old man for allegedly trying to snatch a young child off the street in a south city neighborhood.

According to police, the incident occurred Monday afternoon in the Carondelet neighborhood, near Minnesota and Blow.

A criminal complaint said Christopher Lewis called-out to an 11-year old girl, and then chased her down the street, trying to kidnap her.

Lewis was later apprehended and charged with felony attempted child kidnapping.

“The police came knocking at the door asking if we knew anything about the gold van he was driving,” said Judy Meyer, a neighborhood resident.

Meyer and her husband live in the house Judy grew up in.

“He probably just saw her,” said Meyer. “Although from what I understand, he was standing by the fence listening for her name and called her by name.”

Meyer said another neighbor called police.

“It was a great connection here that people are still doing stuff for other people,” she said.

Neighbors said the girl hid behind a car in order to escape.

By Friday afternoon, some neighbors were still unaware of the incident.

“I’ve lived here for almost two years and I never saw this before,” said Cecilia Aguayo, who moved to St. Louis from Mexico.

Tamera Perkins, who was visiting a friend in the area, said she was surprised to hear about the incident.

“Because it’s the south side,” she said.
