ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - Dr. Sonny Saggar, is here to discuss this often under diagnosed, but easily treated problem. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the center of your neck that sends certain hormones around the body. It`s the `master gland of metabolism`. 1 in 8 women will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime, so many doctors routinely screen for thyroid disease in their female patient.

With an overactive thyroid,  you can get symptoms such as:

  1.  Weight loss, despite an increased appetite
  2. Increased heart rate, heart palpitations, higher blood pressure, nervousness, and excessive perspiration
  3.  More frequent bowel movements, sometimes with diarrhea
  4. Muscle weakness, trembling hands
  5. Development of a goiter (an enlargement in your neck)
  6. Lighter or shorter menstrual periods
