Firefighters rescue worker trapped 20 feet underground

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)- A construction worker was rescued by firefighters after a trench collapse at around 8:45am Friday in St. Louis city.

According to the St. Louis Fire Department, one worker was trapped approximately 20 feet underground in the 4100 block of Finney. MSD subcontractors weres installing sewers when the ground shifted.  Mud and dirt buried the worker up to the waist.  He was trapped for an hour.

At least two dozen firefighters were on the scene. Rescue crews built a rigging system to lift the person out of the trench.  The victim was taken on a stretcher to an ambulance.  The person is being treated at an area hospital for injuries.   Firefighters say the patient is in stable condition.

The St. Louis City Streets Department says that workers did not have a permit.  They are in the process of shutting the project down.  They are investigating this incident.
