EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KPLR) - Residents awoke to a naked gun-man terrorizing their neighborhood Monday morning.  Police wounded the man during the altercation.

The suspect has been identified as Jason Brooks, 41, of East. St. Louis.  He died Monday afternoon at the hospital.

An East St. Louis Police Sergeant, with more than 20 years on the force, was among two officers who opened fire on the suspect. Neighbors near the intersection of 16th and Gaty called to report the gunfire. He allegedly fired rounds at homes and passing motorists.

The man was on his front porch, and still shooting, when officers arrived. Police say he had two guns, a shotgun and a pistol. He fired one of the guns at officers and they returned fire.

A man who lives nearby, and has known the suspect since he was a child, says gunfire and break-ins are common in the neighborhood. He believes the suspect may have been fed-up, and at least initially, jumped out of the shower to chase off burglars.

"At least they could have shot him where he would have dropped the pistol. Then they could have arrested him or whatever. But ,I don't feel they just did an unjust shooting. He had a firearm and they're trying to protect their lives and protect the citizens lives, too." said Reginald Hoover.

No officers, drivers, or neighbors were injured in the shooting.
