ALTON, IL (KPLR) - An Alton business owner believes a random gun shot put a hole through his roof.  Bill Anton owns A+ Automotive on North Rodgers Ave.  He says last week he noticed a hole in the soffit extending over his building.  When he pushed a small pole through the hole, the pole traveled all the way through a hole in the roof.

“Every once in while I hear bullets being fired, and it’s just such a silly thing to do,” said Anton.  “I wish people would stop.”

Anton filed a police report.  A spokesperson for the Alton Police Department says at this point there’s not enough proof to confirm a bullet caused the damage.  Anton plans to use a metal detector to search for evidence.

Anton says his business manager sits a few feet from where they damage was.  He feels fortunate no one was hurt, and hopes anyone thinking about firing a gun into the air this holiday weekend will think again.  He said, “I just hope people think twice before they go outside and fire these things off in the air.”

Alton police echo Anton’s wishes, and say random gunfire can result in injury or death in any community.
