ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - St. Louis drivers will be dealing with a major interstate closure this weekend. A section of I-44 will completely shut down starting Friday night so crews can start tearing down the Grand Boulevard bridge over the interstate. The bridge was built back in 1969 and needs to be replaced,.
At 8:00pm Friday, MoDOT will completely close I-44 between Jefferson and Vandevente in both directions. The stretch of Grand around the bridge area will also completely shut down at 7pm Friday.
MoDOT says they are going to demolish the bridge in stages so they can keep Grand open in some capacity during the rebuild.
MoDOT is encouraging drivers going downtown this weekend for events like the Cardinals homestand against the Rangers to avoid 44 and use alternate interstates like 70, 64 and 55.
Several ramps are also closing including Vandeventer to I-44 east, Lafayette to westbound 44, and Jefferson to 44 west. Those ramp closures will also begin at 8pm Friday night.
MoDOT says lanes will reopen to traffic by 5am Monday morning. When that happens, there will be two lanes going each way on the northbound side of the Grand bridge. MoDOT is warning drivers that the lanes will be narrow.
All of the driving lanes on the bridge are scheduled to reopen by the end of the year.
