ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - St. Louis police believe an attempted robbery of a couple turned into a murder overnight in the Central West End neighborhood.

According to a spokesperson with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting took place just before 1:15 a.m. in the 4500 block of Olive Boulevard.

The 21-year-old female victim told investigators she and a 28-year-old friend were walking west on Olive when a dark-colored vehicle approached and two armed men got out and announced a robbery. It's unclear if the suspects knew the victims.

The 28-year-old male victim got into a fight with a third suspect and was shot while trying to run away. The man was found just outside a nearby cafe and rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The female victim was not injured in the incident. The deceased victim's name has not been released, pending notification of family members.

This is the 75th murder so far this year in the City of St. Louis. We understand last year at this point there were 76 homicides in the city.
