ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR) - A north St. Louis County teen was wounded Tuesday morning by a friend examining a loaded handgun. The accident happened inside the victim's home in the 2000 block of Monk's Hollow Drive. St. Louis County police report the 16-year-old was shot in the ear and possibly his hand. The weapon belonged to an adult.

The teen was taken to DePaul Hospital for treatment while the other 16-year-old was transported to Saint Louis County's Family Court where he could face a charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

Area police urge parents to lock up weapons in gun safes or to get free gun locks from their local police department. Florissant Officer Craig DeHart said children should be taught to never touch a gun, but to walk away from it and tell an adult.

Gun safety videos designed for children or adults are available on the Internet. Both the National Rifle Association, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation provide training videos.
