UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KPLR) – The University City Council is meeting Tuesday night to try to come to some sort of consensus on what to do with the city’s police department building.
The building has been condemned by the city for plumbing, mold and asbestos issues. The officers for their part have been to court to try and force the city follow through with its condemnation order and move the officers to a safer building. That effort failed with a judge denying a temporary restraining order.
Tonight an architectural firm and city staff suggested that the council vote to build a new police station instead of trying to rehab the current facility.
Since 2014, a city commissioned architectural firm has been looking into what to do with the building.
The report says renovating the existing police department would cost $25 million dollars and constructing a new one would cost about half of that.
The price does not include the cost of purchasing the land and moving expenses.
