King Cakes are a big part of Mardi Gras tradition

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - There is no Fat Tuesday parade in St. Louis Tuesday night.  Instead organizers are turning their attentions to celebrations at the Blues game.

FOX 2's Patrick Clark is outside Scottrade Center with a King Cake, which is big part of Mardi Gras.

It is Fat Tuesday, quite literally the translation for Mardi Gras.

It was once called Shrove Tuesday.

But Blues fans know today is the last day to live it up and celebrate with food, dance and most definitely a win.

For years St. Louis has billed itself as the second biggest Mardi Gras outside of New Orleans.

And no one knows more about New Orleans, Fat Tuesday and King Cakes better than Simone Faure at La Patisserie Choquette.

She was born and bred in the Crescent City before making her way up the Mississippi, opening her own bakery and selling a lot of King Cakes leading up to today.

And this was the last chance to get your hands on one until next year.

Mardi Gras is just a great time to bring everyone together and reflect on how life is going and what we can do to improve and celebrate our differences and similarities.

Simone Faure: “Some would say that it's not cake at all because it's closer to a Danish or bread. It is similar to a cinnamon roll and they're rolled.”

And don't forget the baby Jesus.  Some bake the little plastic figures into the cake, La Patisserie Choquette puts theirs on top to prevent any accidental ingesting of something that's supposed to be a good luck symbol.

And if you found the baby Jesus figurine in your cake, it`s your job to bring the King Cake next year.
