CHESTERFIELD, MO (KPLR)- MSD crews are working to repair an underground force main sewer break near the Chesterfield/ Maryland Heights city line.  The break occurred on Waterworks Road in Chesterfield and was first reported by Missouri American Water.  The break is causing sewage to leak into a nearby ditch.

Pump stations upstream of the break will be shut down to allow for repairs. That shut down could cause sewer overflows in parts of Chesterfield including:

  • Caulks Creek near the intersection of Crystal Spring Drive and Brighthurst Drive in Chesterfield.
  • Portions of the walk/bike trail that runs along the Monarch Chesterfield levee south of Chesterfield Commons.
  • Other portions of Caulks Creek.
  • Portions of Bonhomme Creek.

MSD is placing warning signs in these areas to keep people away.   If you should come across an overflowing manhole, contact MSD’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at (314) 768-6260. Repairs of the break are not expected to affect sewer service to homes and businesses in the area.

While the pump stations are shut down, MSD will use vacuum trucks to transport the sewage at the pump stations to MSD’s Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant.

A force main sewer is a sewer line through which wastewater is propelled by the force of pump stations along its path.  The break occurred in a force main built in 1983. A replacement is currently under construction in that area.

MSD has reported the break and sewage overflow to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, as required by law.
