SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – A gas leak forced evacuations late Sunday afternoon in a South St. Louis neighborhood.

The gas leak happened around 2:00 p.m. on Jamieson Avenue near Lindenwood Park.

The St. Louis City Fire Department evacuated five buildings as a safety precaution.

Work crews closed the area off during the evacuation.

Laclede Gas workers responded to the area after residents called about a strong smell of gas in the area.

Workers later discovered a crack in a 12 inch gas line.

Repairs were made to the line, and residents were allowed back to their homes.

It's unknown what caused the crack in the gas line.
