ALTON, IL (KPLR) – An 11-year-old Alton boy who was gunned down was mourned Tuesday by family, friends and teachers.  People say Romell Jones was an outstanding youngster.

The Major Case Squad is leading the investigation, Major Jeff Connor said, “Investigating crimes like this really tears your heart out.  We need help from anybody who knows anything about what led up or what took place afterwards as far as anybody involved in this crime.”

The coroner said Romell Jones died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. People created a makeshift memorial made of teddy bears at the Alton Acres housing complex where Romell lived.  He was waiting to be picked up for basketball practice Monday evening when someone drove by in a red four door vehicle and fired multiple shots. One hit the youngster. His mom and dad were devastated by their loss.  His father, Robert Jones said, “He loved playing basketball, he was good in school he was a wonderful child he didn’t deserve this.”  Romell’s mother said, “He was taken away way too soon…my baby will always be with me for eternity and I’ll always love him.”

Robert Jones concluded, “I want justice served. Anybody should want justice served if someone takes away someone who didn’t deserve to be taken away.” Romell was a fifth grader at Gilson Brown elementary school.  Teachers said he was excellent student and mentored younger kids.

He dreamed about becoming the best N.B.A. player ever, he had a ready smile. A Go Fund Me page has been established so the parents can afford to bury their son.
