MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KTVI)-  A special Christmas party was held Friday for the children at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Hospital courtesy of the Maryland Heights Police Department. It's the best day of the year, the Friday before Christmas week.

"These kids have been through so much and a lot of them have traumatic injuries or very, very serious health issues,” said Police Chief Bill Carson. “And if this brightens their day and helps bring a little joy to their lives, it's worth every penny."

The magic begins with a police parade and the grand arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. The festivities continue in the warmth of the hospital lobby where staffers, patients, families, and police officers all gather around to watch each child's name called off the "nice list" by Jolly Old Saint Nick himself.

Throughout the year,  the Maryland Heights Police Department holds fundraisers to pay for the Christmas gifts. Every child at Ranken Jordan is given the presents they requested from Santa.

The joyous tradition is one that many police officers won't miss for anything.
