Truck carrying hazardous waste catches fire on I-44

STANTON, MO  (KPLR)-A potential HAZMAT situation led to evacuations in Franklin County, MO Sunday afternoon.  Sheriff Gary Toelke says that a tractor-trailer truck carrying hazardous waste had a rear tire catch fire.

The truck fire happened in the westbound lanes at mile marker 233 of I-44, between Stanton and St. Clair, MO. Homes within a half mile of the scene were evacuated as a precaution.

I-44 was shutdown in both directions between Sullivan and St. Clair for a time. Around 1:15pm,  the eastbound lanes of the interstate reopened. The westbound lanes reopened around 1:40pm.
