BELLEVILLE, IL (KPLR) โ€“ Just hours before Halloween, vandals decided to play some very expensive tricks on residents. They went crazy with spray paint.

Belleville police got its first report of spray-painting around 1 p.m. Friday. Cars were damaged; so were garages, even a city park. In all, 14 different places in the area of the 700 block of St. Clair Avenue were tagged.

Some of the graffiti contains gang signs and racism, while some of the markings have no discernible message at all.

The neighborhood is racially mixed.

People began cleaning up the mess as quickly as they found it.

Police are not sure of the motive or who did it, but they suspect juveniles.
