MADISON, IL (KPLR) – Officials celebrated Monday the completion of the south harbor at America's Central Port in Madison, Illinois.  The massive conveyor system loads barges from trucks and rail to be sent on the river.  The harbor is expected to create more transportation opportunities for Madison County and the St. Louis region.

The port is located south of Locks and Dam 27, and allows for free-flowing water between St. Louis to the port of New Orleans.

Dennis Wilmsmeyer/Executive Director, America's Central Port: “There's so much happening in the St. Louis region right now...we believe it was perfect timing."

The $50 million dollar project began in 2012, but the design and concept began over 20 years ago.
