EAST ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - New developments could be in the works between the union and the school district as East St. Louis teachers continue to strike over wages.

FOX 2 Kelley Hoskins talked with district officials late Sunday night about the latest on contract negotiations.

The two sides are at odds over contract proposal that according to the district would save the school system at least $10 million dollars.

However Sunday night an East St. Louis district spokesperson says a counter offer will be presented Monday by the union during negotiations

“The district, we are going to receive a counter offer from local 1220 to the previous contract, “said Kelli Hawkins, East St. Louis district spokesperson.

The district released new details Sunday night about what could possibly end the strike.

Some East St. Louis student are still  feeling the pain  and frustrated after  classes,  sports activities and the homecoming game along with the dance all called off

I feel like if the teachers want to get paid more and that's effecting the students  education you need  to find some kind of way to pay the teachers more so the kids can be back in school” said  student O’na

Earlier in the week the teachers union voted down a tentative contract agreement that would have doubled the amount of years it would take for a teacher to get to the top of the pay scale which would possibly decrease the pay of new teachers and staff over a long period.

East St. Louis teacher's union says teachers and support staff have been working without a pay raise for more than two years.

But district  officials stated Sunday night students could  be back in their classes very soon “ we are very hopeful for the entire community  the teachers, the school administrations but most importantly  the students we all served that we will be back in school Tuesday ,” said Hawkins

We reached out to the teachers union Sunday night and no one was available for comment.

The district would not go into too many details about the counter offer expected to be presented Monday.

The strike affects about 6,000 students.
