COLLINSVILLE, IL (KPLR) - The Illinois Department of Transportation expects significant delays for traffic heading eastbound on the Poplar Street Bridge because of a highway lane closure. Workers are repairing an area of the concrete bridge deck.

The eastbound lane of the collector will be closed on I-55/64 just east of the Poplar Street Bridge.  This is the roadway that services ramps to both Sauget and East St Louis, then funnels traffic back onto I-55/64.  Roadwork has the potential to cause delays.

Road crews are hoping to delay work on the until after Tuesday evening's rush hour.  They expect to close the lane at 6pm.  But, this is a fluid situation, and the bridge deck could deteriorate at any time.

"This is not a pothole, it’s a deck failure.  The failure is through to the rebar on the bridge deck.  IDOT is hopeful they can continue to keep rush hour traffic moving through 6 p.m.    They admit they cannot guarantee because the failure is deteriorating rapidly.   They are sending a motorist assist vehicle on a constant loop through the area to continually check the deck.  If they determine repairs can’t wait until 6 pm, they’ll close the roadway.  In order to do correct traffic control for the closure, they will have to close the right lane all the way back onto the Poplar Street Bridge.  Repairs will begin at 6 pm and will continue into tomorrow.    The deck failure is in the right lane of the Collector/Distributor. " said Joe Monroe, Operations Engineer for IDOT.

IDOT expects significant delays until at least Wednesday. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route.
