EAST ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - The You Paid For It Team questioned former East St. Louis Mayor and now City Manger Alvin Parks over spending tax dollars for new cars for himself and two other city officials.
It's an impoverished town looking at laying off a lot of the town's firefighters and police officers because of a budget crisis.
Despite that, Alvin Parks spent $56,000 two months before the April election to buy new cars for the Mayor, City Manager, and TIF Director.
Parks lost the $50,000 Mayor's job, but his political buddies on the City Council made him the City Manger at a $100,000 salary and he has twice the power as before. And the new job came with the new car Parks bought.
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is among those criticizing this deal for Parks calling it bad for citizens.
Parks says he sees nothing wrong with spending your money on nice cars for officials saying citizens want to see they're officials in a nice car even if they have to pay for it.
