ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR) –MODOT is shutting down part of Interstate 44 over the Meramec River.  It's going to stay through at October.

Drivers will feel it most in Kirkwood, Sunset Hills, Fenton, Euerka, and beyond.  Soccer Park in Fenton is really going to be impacted.

The closure began Wednesday night at 9 with workers setting up the work zone and putting construction barriers into place.

Dino Nicastro was among the throng of parents squeezing into Soccer Park for practices Wednesday night.

He didn’t know the closure extended beyond the first night.

Workers will be repairing the driving surface of westbound I-44 over the Meramec River, 1 lane at a time --the far right lane first.  So, the Soccer Park exit will be closed.  Drivers will have to use the Bowles exit and circle back.

“Instead of leaving at 6:15pm (for 6:30 practice) I’ll leave at 6 and see how that works,” Nicastro said.

“It’s not going to help, that’s for sure, especially trying to get kids to 3 different practices – back to back to back practices and make sure you’re on time,” said mother, Angela Bean.  “It’s definitely not going to help.”

MODOT suggests alternate routes, but if you need to get to Soccer Park coming from the east, I– 44 is really the only way.

The St. Louis FC soccer team has two remaining home games:  Sept. 12 and Sept. 19.

There will be just one lane closed through the day but workers may close two overnight – especially when they finish one lane and move onto the next.
