FESTUS, MO (KPLR)-Know before you go, speeding on Interstate 55 in Jefferson County, MO could cost you double. MoDOT has established a Travel Safe Zone between Route Z in Pevely and U.S. 67 in Festus/ Crystal City.  Signs are posted warning drivers that fines for moving violations in the zone will be doubled.

MoDOT set this as a Travel Safe Zone because the number of serious and fatal accidents is higher than the average on similar stretches of interstate.  The designation is in effect through the end of the year.

Six agencies are partnering in the I-55 Travel Safe Zone: Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and the Pevely, Herculaneum, Festus and Crystal City police departments.
