Witness fires shots to scare away teen carjackers, protect victim

EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KPLR)- A horrifying carjacking in Edwardsville left one woman injured and frightened and three teenagers in custody. Police said a neighbor fired a gun and scared the suspects away.  The victim is a 52-year-old woman, she wants to remain anonymous.  She said, “This guy rushes up to me puts a gun in my face and I can’t understand what he says he’s got a coat pulled up over his face and a hat on his head.”

His accomplices were parked nearby in what police said was a stolen car.  The suspect with the gun demanded the victim’s car keys and purse but the petite woman was ready to fight.  She said, “No, no, no you’re not getting my stuff dude.  And I just started screaming and pushed him back and he hit me on top of the head.”

She said he hit her four times on the head. When she grabbed his private parts he got even more violent,  The victim added, “That’s when he smacked me across the face with the gun and I went flying down behind the car and he got in the car and I knew if started the car he’d back up he’d run back over me. That’s when I heard gun shots and he got out of the car and ran away.”

The unknown neighbor fired the gun and scared the three away. Police said one suspect was caught on foot in a nearby cemetery. The other two who were in the stolen car were captured near a bank not far away.

Charged are Lorenzo M. Waller, he’s believed to be the gunman, Martece A. Schumpert police said she was driving the stolen car and Quan A. Willis.  He was a passenger in that car. All are 17 and from St. Louis. They are being charged as adults. The woman wants the three to go to prison.  She said, “They didn’t value their lives any more than they valued me.  It’s a tragedy and it’s really a shame.”

Bond on each is a $500,000. They are charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, aggravated unlawful use of weapons and aggravated battery if convicted they could each spend almost 70 years in prison.
