New student housing part of continuing revival of mid-town St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – When St. Louis University students start moving for the fall semester some will be living in the lap of luxury, as a taste of Park Avenue comes to Forest Park Avenue.

It is called The Standard; a high end student apartment building adjacent to St. Louis University but privately owned.

The apartments include elegant touches like granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances.

The building also features a seven story garage, a pool, a fitness center, a club room and a bar selling Starbucks coffee.

But how can students afford something so deluxe?

'You don`t actually rent the full apartment, you rent a room and then you share amenities with the other people,' said Community Manager Joseph Stilwell.

The apartments run from one to five bedrooms.

The more you share, the less you pay.

And everyone gets their own bathroom.

Prices range from $800 to $1100 a month.

You don`t have to be a student to live at The Standard, and if you are a freshman or sophomore at SLU you can`t live there because they are required to reside on campus.

But soon, those underclassmen will have new apartments of their own because SLU is building two new large residence halls.

And that`s only part of what is happening in the city's central corridor.

'When you add it all up it will be in the billions of dollars,' said 17th ward Alderman Joe Roddy.

In the Central West End, a new apartment building and Whole Foods store will open later this year at Euclid and West Pine, with construction now getting underway on a 12 story apartment building at Euclid and Lindell.

There is also the continuing growth at Cortex plus a billion dollar project happening at BJC.

'It is probably the most dramatic investment spree we have had in the city in decades,' Roddy said.

All but one of the 465 rooms at the Standard is leased.

One other thing that makes The Standard something special is the fact that the developers, Landmark Properties and St. Louis based Sangita did not ask the city for a single tax break, and will make a donation to BackStoppers to celebrate the Grand Opening.

The first tenants move in this weekend.

The grand opening is Monday at 10:00 a.m.
