ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR) - A person of interest was taken into custody Tuesday morning in connection with the case of the sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in Mehlville over the weekend. The girl told police that she had been sexually assaulted in her bedroom and in front of her brothers by a man that had followed her and her mother out of a south St. Louis County grocery store the day before.

The specifics on the Mehlville case are similar to crimes committed in Illinois by convicted burglar Larry Alverson, 40, who has a history of home invasions and inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature.  On Tuesday, Belleville, IL Police confirmed that Alverson had been captured in St. Louis County. He had been on the run since Friday, July 10, 2015, when he was spotted by workers in a medical building near St. Elizabeth’s Hospital exposing himself.

At the time, Alverson was on the run after a conditional release from prison in June 2015. He was being electronically monitored but cut off his ankle bracelet. In February 2015, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of Criminal Trespass to a Residence and had been sentenced to more than 2 years in jail.

Neither Belleville nor St. Louis County police are commenting at this time on any connection between the Mehlville assault and the Alverson arrest. St. Louis County Police tell FOX 2 that their investigation into the Mehlville case is continuing and that they are gathering information on the crime and suspect in custody.

On Tuesday, St. Louis City Police confirmed that they are investigating the sexual assault of a 13-year-old female inside the Target store on Hampton Avenue in south St. Louis Monday night. Police say the suspect walked past the victim, squeezed her buttocks, then walked away. The girl told a relative and police were called.  St. Louis Police are not commenting on whether or not their case could be connected to the Alverson or Mehlville cases.

In 2003, Alverson was convicted of breaking into a home in a neighborhood on N. 5th Street in Belleville. Once inside, he went into a teenage girl’s bedroom and molested her. He was sentenced to 10 years. Back in the late 1990s, court records indicate Alverson broke into two homes on South Jackson in Belleville and climbed into the beds of two women and fondling them while they slept.

Alverson was charged on July 13 with the felonies of escape and criminal damage to property and a misdemeanor of public indecency with lewd exposure. Bail was set at $250,000. U.S. Marshals have been assisting in the hunt for Alverson.
