ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Sunday evening St. Louis Fire Department marine units were called to the Mississippi River near the East Davis for the sinking of a tugboat with a crew of three. Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson says the tugboat was operating near some barges on the Missouri side of the river when it sunk underneath the barges.

Two crew members were rescued by other tugboats and are safe.

Currently the fire department has six boats in the water, along with other tugboats using sonar trying to find the last missing crew member. The search effort is being hampered by high water, swift current and debris on the river.

Rescuers are searching as far as the Jefferson Barracks Bridge for the missing crew member.
