Bodies found while police search for vehicles swept away in flash floods

FESTUS, MO (KPLR) – Authorities are searching near Buck Creek and Spur road, south of Festus, after three vehicles were swept away by flood waters Wednesday night.  Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum  two bodies were found at Buck Creek in Jefferson County.

The first body has been identified as Sarah Barrett, 35, of De Soto, MO.

Eyewitnesses report at least two of those vehicles may have had people inside.  Two GMC vans and one Pontiac Grand Prix were swept away.  The car and one of the vans are still unaccounted for.

Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum also said a woman called a family member and the phone went dead. The family member said she was standing on top of the car during the call. She is still unaccounted for.  It is not clear if the body identified is the missing woman.

Investigators are still searching for at least two missing people swept away during flash flooding.  They are having a tough time.  Flood waters have made a mess of the area.  Vehicles are all over the place and many homes have been flooded.  Mud and muck are covering a lot of ground.
