ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – If you judge by TV ratings, there may be no city in America as caught up in the women’s World Cup soccer frenzy.
Barrister's bar and restaurant in Clayton was like central command for the U.S. team, with two St. Louis women playing.
Still, Tic Toc Tavern in South St. Louis held a Team Germany party for the U.S. v Germany World Cup semifinal game Tuesday night.
It turned out Barrister’s was the place to be with the U.S. shutting out top ranked Germany.
Lori Chalupny of Nerinx Hall high school and Becky Sauerbrunn of Ladue high school are on the U.S. team.
Sauerbrunn’s older brothers were in the jam-packed crowd at Barrister’s.
Their sister has been a star defender for the U.S.
Defense has fueled the team’s run to the cup final.
Tic Toc’s owner is certainly on the Sauerbrunn bandwagon.
He was raised in St. Louis but born in Germany.
So he tried to have a little fun with the game.
“It’s mostly in fun. Nobody’s going to live or die with who ends up winning this game. But it’s nice to have a place to go where you can kind of root for the other team,” said Tic Toc owner, Thomas Crone.
Sauerbrunn’s brothers were beyond proud of their little sis.
“She put a lot of time, a lot of work, a lot of missed weekends with friends to get to this stage. So she deserves this,” said big brother, Grant.
“Tom Hanks tweeted about her a week ago. You’ve got Tom Hanks tweeting about your sister. She’s in all sorts of articles, ESPN … it’s just crazy. You just try to soak it all in and enjoy the moment,” said big brother, Adam.
Chalupny didn’t get to play.
There will be another party at Barrister’s Sunday when the U.S. plays the winner of Wednesday’s England-Japan for the cup. Sauerbrunn’s brothers won’t be there.
They’ll join their parents in Canada for the game.
KTVI-FOX2 will air both the third place game and World Cup final matches. Coverage of the third place game is set to start at 2 pm Saturday, July 4th. The World Cup final will be on Sunday, July 5th with game coverage starting at 5 pm central between Team USA and the winner England vs. Japan.
