WEST ALTON, MO (KPLR) – The road signs are still up on Route 67 in West Alton at Highway 94. The Missouri Department of Transportation closed southbound Route 67 on Saturday night due to high water covering part of the roadway, leaving motorists no choice but to find an alternate route.
But MoDOT hopes to have both northbound and southbound traffic moving over the Clark Bridge by Monday afternoon.
By 3 p.m., southbound traffic coming into Missouri from Alton should be able to use one lane of northbound 67.
Crews still need to do some work on temporary striping, barriers and signals before opening the northbound roadway to two-way traffic. Traffic flow will stay this way until the water recedes and MoDOT can reopen the southbound Route 67 lanes from the Clark Bridge to Highway 94.
The National Weather Service the Mississippi River crested in Alton a little earlier Monday morning, just over 30.2 feet. The southbound lanes of Route 67 flood at about 29.5 feet. The river is expected to remain above 29 feet in this area until late Wednesday, meaning the two-way traffic set up in the northbound lanes may remain for a couple of days.
