EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – A Madison County jury convicted a 25-year-old man Friday for the February 2014 murder of an Alton man following an argument over a dice game.

Alton police were called to a shooting at the Storey Manor Apartment complex in Cottage Hills at 10 p.m. on February 5, 2014. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Demetrius Lucas, had already been taken to Alton Memorial Hospital before police arrived. Lucas, who’d been shot twice, was then transferred to a St. Louis-area hospital where he later died.

After talking to witnesses and gathering other evidence, detectives arrested Justin Vaughn around 2:30 a.m.

Vaughn lived in the complex and was having a birthday party at his apartment. Investigators determined Vaughn and Lucas got into an argument during a dice game, culminating with the shooting.

It took jurors less than 90 minutes to convict Vaughn of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon. Vaughn had prior convictions in 2011 for mob action and unlawful restraint.

Vaughn will receive at least 45 years imprisonment at sentencing. The murder conviction carries a minimum 20-year sentence and an additional 25 years for using a firearm to commit that murder. Being a felon in possession of a firearm carries a three to seven-year prison term.
