MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KPLR)-June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. The Humane Society of Missouri is celebrating with no-fee cat adoptions from June 15-18, 2015. All cats have been examined by veterinary experts for good health and temperament and have been socialized by HSMO staff and volunteers.

The giveaway is the result of what is essentially a glut of cats; about 100 are currently up for adoption.

Angela Smith with the Humane Society explains, “Anytime that it gets warmer out and people don’t spay or neuter their pets, or there are strays out and we have all these kittens and puppies.  And we have ended up with a lot of adult cats and kittens.”

It's quite the deal for the adoptive family.  The Humane Society invests about $300 in each cat's medical care before handing it to the new owner.

“We want to have enough room for new cats to come in.”

The no adoption fee applies to cats 6 months of age and older. The offer is available at any Humane Society of Missouri Adoption Center.
