Belleville man charged in alleged sexual assault at Southwestern Illinois College

BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) – A 17-year-old female student told campus police last Friday that she was assaulted on May 11th on the Southwestern Illinois College Belleville campus. According to court documents 19-year-old Shannon B. Schmidt of Belleville allegedly picked up the female student and pushed her up against a wall where he forced her to have sex with him. Campus police investigated the claims and turned evidence over to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney to review.

The college also released a statement saying in part:

Based upon the complaint and a subsequent investigation Shannon B. Schmidt was arrested on May 29th. He was charged on the 31st.

The St. Clair County State’s Attorney charged Schmidt with two felony counts of criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint. He`s being held at the St .Clair County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Officials say the school can`t confirm if the suspect is a student citing confidentiality issues. So far there's no word on a future court date.
