ALTON, IL (KTVI) – A water main break in the City of Alton, Illinois last month may require extensive repairs.

According to Robert Barnhart, Director of Public Works, the fire department was refilling its truck while cleaning Lincoln Douglas Square when a hydrant broke lose damaging the water main. Heavy pressure caused buckling in several areas.

Barnhart said breaks in the sewer main caused damage to the foundation of the road causing it to cave in on East Broadway.

"What you see at the top is just a symptom of a problem underneath," he said.

Eastbound traffic on Broadway is reduced to one lane around the hole. More lanes could be impacted depending on the extent of the damage below.

At this point, Barnhart estimates it could cost $50,000-$100,000 to repair the damage, and repairs could begin as early as Thursday (May 28).
