Man fatally shoots self after leading police on high speed pursuit

STAUNTON, IL (KPLR)-  A man is dead after fatally shooting himself following a police pursuit early Saturday morning.  According to the Illinois State Police, the 20-year-old man was stopped and arrested  for DUI near Carlinville, IL, around 4:00am.  The suspect posted bond and was released.   Police say that, sometime around 6:00am, the same man got a hold of a friend's car and began driving erratically in Gillespie, IL.

He led police on a high-speed pursuit towards Staunton, IL. The chase involved officers from Gillespie, Benld, and Staunton.

The pursuit ended at the suspect's parents' home at 7th and Best Street in Staunton. The suspect abandoned the car in an alley, ran inside and got a gun, and climbed out onto the roof where he fatally shot himself.

A witness told FOX 2 that they heard the gunshot and suspect's mother screaming.

Illinois State Police are leading the investigation in this case.
