EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KPLR) – A 43-year-old Centreville man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for the 2013 murder of a man, whose body was discovered in Horseshoe Lake State Park, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Scottie Thompson was convicted of first-degree murder on February 12 following a three-day trial.

Prosecutors said Thompson beat Dakota Jones to death in the early morning hours of August 11, 2013. Three fishermen discovered Jones’ body in Horseshoe Lake later that morning. Illinois State Police was brought in to assist in the investigation, and Thompson was arrested and charged two days later.

Thompson and Jones met the previous night in East St. Louis. There was no indication the two men knew each other prior to that night. Thompson supposedly agreed to give Jones, a Cahokia resident, a ride to meet a friend. The two men drove off together around 10:30 p.m. Police believe Thompson beat Jones in the head with a blunt object several hours later.
