U.S., New Zealand women face-off at Busch Stadium Saturday
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Before the St. Louis Cardinals take to the diamond, the ladies will take the soccer pitch as the U.S. Women’s National Team takes on New Zealand Saturday at Busch Stadium at 3 p.m.
This exhibition game will give U.S. coach Jill Ellis a chance to determine a final Women’s World Cup roster. That tournament starts in June and two more cuts will need to be made before finalizing a 23-woman roster.
St. Louis fans will be seeing former St. Louis Athletica goalkeeper Hope Solo on the pitch. In early March, Solo helped the women’s team win the Algarve Cup by allowing just one goal in four games. Her performance came shortly after her suspension from the U.S. team ended. According to Fox Sports, Solo was suspended in January after her husband, former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens, drove a team van under the influence of alcohol.
The U.S. will take on a New Zealand team who has struggled as of late. The last four matches yielded no wins for the New Zealand team and their last victory came in January. It will be a tough challenge against a U.S. team who has outscored the last four opponents 7-1.
The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
